Quantum Ratchets

چکیده
We investigate quantum Brownian motion in adiabatically rocked ratchet systems. Above a crossover temperature Tc tunneling events are rare, yet they already substantially enhance the classical particle current. Below Tc, quantum tunneling prevails and the classical predictions grossly underestimate the transport. Upon approaching T 0 the quantum current exhibits a tunneling induced reversal, and tends to a finite limit. [S0031-9007(97)03540-0]

Noisy quantum Parrondo games
Alternating two fair coin flipping games can create a winning game. Such a Parrondo game is a discrete model for a thermal ratchet. Recently we have constructed quantum versions of these coin flipping games that display the same “paradoxical” behavior. In this paper we add noise to these quantum Parrondo games in order that they can be compared with continuum models of quantum ratchets. Simulat...

The concept of thermal ratchets is extended to the system governed by quantum mechanics. We study a tight-binding model with an asymmetric periodic potential contacting with a heat bath under an external oscillating field as a specific example of quantum ratchet. Dynamics of a density operator of this system is studied numerically by using the quantum Liouville equation. Finite net current is f...

Currently there is a great amount of scientific research directed at ratchet devices and mechanisms. Initially stimulated by a need to understand biological systems, the field has widened to encompass mesoscopic and atomic physics as well as quantum effects. The great majority of this effort has been directed at systems which include noise (Brownian ratchets). Comparatively little work has been...

We investigate directed motion in nonadiabatically rocked ratchet systems sustaining few bands below the barrier. Upon restricting the dynamics to the lowest M bands, the total system-plus-bath Hamiltonian is mapped onto a discrete tight-binding model containing all the information both on the intrawell and interwell tunneling motion. A closed form for the current in the incoherent tunneling re...

At low temperatures and strong friction the time evolution of the density distribution in position follows a quantum Smoluchowski equation. Recently, also higher-order contributions of quantum fluctuations to drift and diffusion coefficients have been systematically derived. As a nontrivial situation to reveal the impact of subleading quantum corrections and to demonstrate convergence propertie...
متن کاملZeeman ratchets: pure spin current generation in mesoscopic conductors with non-uniform magnetic fields
We consider the possibility to employ a quantum wire realized in a twodimensional electron gas (2DEG) as a spin ratchet. We show that a net spin current without accompanying net charge transport can be induced in the nonlinear regime by an unbiased external driving via an ac voltage applied between the contacts at the ends of the quantum wire. To achieve this we make use of the coupling of the ...
